Reviewing The Fellowes Intellishred Sb-89ci Cross Cut Paper Shredder

The Fellowes Intellishred SB-89Ci is a sleek, compact

, powerful and feature-rich shredder, designed for medium-duty in a small office setting. Here are a few of the strengths and weaknesses of the Fellowes SB-89Ci.

Strengths:

1.) We've always found that paper jams are about as enjoyable as... paper jams. The SB-89Ci is a machine that seems to want to end those annoyances forever, with its remarkable "Jam Proof" system. We found it the indicator very easy to use and decipher: green lights told us when we could put more paper into the shredder, and yellow indicates that you are within the machine's comfort zone. If you try and feed too much paper into the SB-89Ci you will see the red light, and the shredder will not function until you remove some paper from the load. All in all, it's a pretty impressive way to ensure that you don't overfeed the machine. Also pretty impressive is how the SB-89Ci can power its way through any paper that is inadvertently fed at an angle into the shredder. Lots of power in a pretty small package.

2.) If you've read any of our reviews before, you know that we like to pay special attention to a shredder's safety features. Apparently, the SB-89Ci does too. This machine features Fellowes' patented "Safe Sense" system that utilizes special electronic sensors near the feed opening to detect (using body heat) when hands and fingers get too close to the shredder's feed opening, and stop the motor and cutting heads immediately. We think this is a fantastic feature, especially if there are ever kids or pets in the office. The SB-89Ci will also stop operation when its bin door is open, and/or when the shred bag is full.

3.) We also greatly prefer shredders that offer a cross cut pattern that is rated at a security level of at least 3, and the SB-89Ci delivers in that regard as well. Level 3 security is what is required in order to comply with federal FACTA laws, enacted recently to help reduce identity theft. Documents that are shredded in this manner are virtually impossible for the criminally-minded to piece back together, so you know that your documents are safe to discard when they have been fed into the SB-89Ci.

4.) Of course, confidential info doesn't just come in paper form these days. The SB-89Ci is able to shred credit cards and even CDs and DVDs, and the powerful motor and (lifetime-guaranteed) cutting heads can also deal with paper clips and staples easily as well. The machine states a capacity of 15 sheets at a time, and we found it hit that mark relatively easily. You may find that number varies, however, depending on what kind of paper you are shredding and the type of power you are using.

Weaknesses:

1.) Though the SB-89Ci gives you some nice capacity and remarkable features, you should be aware that it is a shredder that is designed for a small number of users, and will not be up to the task of a high volume shredding environment. It can operate for a maximum of twenty minutes continuously before it turns itself off to cool the motor. If you need a continuous-use shredder, Fellowes makes a number of them, including the C-220i, which has all of the great features of the SB-89Ci as well.
