Robben Island, once a prison that held many leaders of the South African freedom struggle and now is a symbol of liberation. It was declared a World Heritage site in 1999. Imprisonment of Nelson Mandela and other freedom activists gave this prison a historic importance.
Robben Island is a bean shaped largest island in the waters of South Africa; it is situated about 9 kilometers away from Cape Town in the Table Bay and offers a spectacular view of Cape Town. Minto Hill is the highest point on the island only 30 meters above sea level and is the oldest lighthouse in southern region. Robben Island museum tells you about the first landing of Vasco da Gama's support fleet in 1498 when this fleet took a momentary shelter in its waters, during the British occupation this island was used as a leper colony, and Muslim activists fighting against the Dutch colonization were also incarcerated here.
In 1960 this prison was used as the maximum-security section for the political leaders and the most dangerous criminals, Prisoners in this jail, which is now the historic museum, were subject to mental and physical tortures, brutality and hard labor, and today the tales of their experiences are the symbol of the victory of humanity over the inhuman, crimes against humanity. Robben Island Prison is now a heritage site and there are many organized tours for the visitors, these tours mostly from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the waterfront in Cape Town.
