Rhinoplasty; Its Roots Are Deep Within India.

Rhinoplasty was developed around 500 B.C by a man named Sushruta. He was the first to write a book about Rhinoplasty as well as other cosmetic surgical procedures. Sushruta developed this procedure because of the punishments given to those during that time. In his society certain crimes were punishable by the removal of the nose and the recipients of this punishment wanted to reconstruct their noses. Sushruta was very successful with his practices and to this day many of his techniques go unchanged due to the effectiveness of his procedures.

Modern cosmetic nose surgery has changed the methods and options available for the cosmetic surgeon. Jacques Joseph and Johann Dieffenbach were the first to use external incisions to modify and reduce the size of the nose. Then a man named John Orlando Roe performed the first intranasal Rhinoplasty in the United States in 1887.

Up until the 1970s all Rhinoplasty procedures were performed through John Orlando Roes intranasal approach usually called a closed Rhinoplasty, but in 1973 all of that would change. During 1973 a cosmetic surgeon named Dr. Wilfred S. Goodman wrote and published an article entitled External Approach to Rhinoplasty. This publication revolutionized the way a cosmetic surgeon could approach deformities of the nose. Many surgeons refer to this technique as an open Rhinoplasty.

Another surgeon would write a publication to solidify and refine this technique; Dr. Jack Anderson. Dr. Jack Anderson wrote the article Open Rhinoplasty: an assessment. This article contributed to the acceptance and the growing popularity of this procedure. Dr. Jack Anderson trainee Dr. Jack P. Gunter later published and article explaining the benefits of open Rhinoplasty as a secondary Rhinoplasty to treat deformities from previous Rhinoplasty operations.

The main difference between a closed Rhinoplasty and an open Rhinoplasty is the placement of the incision around or inside of the nose. A Closed Rhinoplasty has the cosmetic surgeon create incisions inside of the nose, altering the shape of the nose. An Open Rhinoplasty has the cosmetic surgeon make incision outside of the nose in an inconspicuous place as well as inside of the nose similar to a closed Rhinoplasty.

Throughout time, Rhinoplasty procedures have evolved. Developed all the way in India around 500 B.C and now is a commonly performed procedure all around the world in places like, New York, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles California, and Japan.
