Rhinoplasty: Know What To Expect On The Day Of Surgery

If you are not happy with how your nose looks

, there are options to fix it. One of the most popular choices for this is rhinoplasty, often called a nose job. Before you opt for this procedure, you should know in general what it involves. This way, you will not be surprised by anything on the day of surgery.

One of the first steps will be to administer anesthesia so that you do not feel anything during the procedure. In most cases, it will be local anesthesia, although some doctors may decide to give you general anesthesia instead, especially if the surgery is rather complex. In most cases, you should arrange to have a ride home from the procedure since you will likely not feel like driving either way.

The incision is usually placed inside the nostril when possible, which is referred to as a closed procedure. Clearly you would not have a visible cut with this type of rhinoplasty. Sometimes it is necessary to have an open procedure, in which you will likely have a small scar on the outside of the area. The choice depends on what your doctor feels is necessary.

If you want to reduce your nose size, the surgeon will simply remove excess cartilage from the area until it is a bit smaller. It can also be reshaped in this way. If you want to add tissue to some areas, your doctor will take cartilage from the septum, ear, or ribs. Obviously this type of procedure is more involved than one that requires removing tissue, but you should see the results you want if your surgeon is experienced.

Once the rhinoplasty is over, the incision will be closed. The tissue and skin will be sculpted into the shape you want. In most cases, any scars you have will be rather small, almost invisible to most people.

Do not expect to see the desired results immediately afterward. Like most plastic surgeries, it takes time to see what you have been waiting for since the area has to heal first. Your nose may be noticeably smaller soon after the rhinoplasty, unless of course, there is swelling, but it may not be the shape you expected.

Do not judge the result until your surgeon says it is healed. If you still do not like the appearance of this feature months after surgery, you can schedule a revision rhinoplasty to get the look you want.
