Rich History, Beautiful Country, and an Educational Experience for All

There's something about visiting a city where you can actually see the history unfolding in your imagination

. Seeing sites where historical events took place is really a remarkable experience.

The city of Great Falls, Montana, is full of rich history and amazing places to visit. The first inhabitants of this area were nomadic Native Americans and didn't stay for long periods of time. The Blackfoot Indians claimed the area around 1600 and remained there until the United States spread west and claimed it in 1803.

In 1805, Meriwether Lewis visited what is now Great Falls, MT, as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It was not settled as an official city until 1883, when Paris Gibson arrived and saw endless possibilities for industry. The five waterfalls in the area, from which Great Falls got its name, would provide plenty of power with hydroelectricity, which had been recently discovered. Gibson mapped out a plan for the city and helped establish businesses as well as a post office, school, and newspaper. By November of 1888, Great Falls was an incorporated city.

Visitors to the city today can explore the rich history by visiting museums like the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trial Interpretive Center and The History Museum. The History Museum, located on historic Machinery Row, includes approximately 95,000 historical relics and tells the stories of those who have had effects on the Central Montana region.

The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center tells the story of the great Expedition of the early 19th century. You can enjoy the indoor exhibits at the museum before going outdoors to explore the trails. Here, you can find signs that tell about how Montana's landscape and wildlife affected the Expedition.

If you have little ones joining you on your trip to Great Falls, they will be thrilled with a trip to the Children's Museum of Montana. Children learn by touch and experience, and this museum is full of hands-on exhibits that show the culture of Montana as well as fun science and math exhibits.

If you are a history buff, Great Falls is a great place to visit to learn more about the 19th century western expansion of the United States. Not only can you visit sites where historical events took place, but you can also enjoy the wild, untouched beauty of Montana by hiking state parks, discovering Lewis and Clark Caverns, and boating on the scenic Missouri River.
