Strokes are a very serious medical condition. A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function caused by either interrupted blood flow or a rupture of brain blood vessels. Depending on what part of your brain is damaged you may experience any of the following warning signs:

1. Weakness: sudden loss of strength or numbness in your body

2. Trouble Speaking: unusual and sudden stuttering or general confusion


3. Vision Problems: any difficulty seeing including blurred vision

4. Headache: sudden severe headache

5. Dizziness: especially with any of the 4 other signs.

If you think you're having a stroke it's important to call your local emergency number right away. If your stroke is related to a blood clot, the hospital can give you a special clot-busting drug but it is only effective within the first few hours of having a stroke.

The effects of strokes are different for each person and depend on what part of your brain was injured:

If the stroke affected your cerebrum, you may have long-term symptoms including weakness or paralysis along the right or left side of your body, slower behaviour, trouble learning or executing instructions, vision problems, short-term memory loss, and judgement difficulties.

If the stroke affected your brain stem, which is less common, your long-term symptoms may include difficulty breathing, controlling body temperature, and balancing. You may also have weakness or your extremities and difficulty chewing or swallowing

Finally, if the stroke affected your cerebellum, which is also more uncommon, you may experience more severe long-term effects including inability to walk, problems with coordination and balance, severe dizziness, headaches, and nausea and vomiting.

While some stroke risk is based on your family medical history, age, gender, and ethnicity, you can help control other factors in your life to minimize your chances of having a stroke. Make sure to manage your blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, weight, and alcohol consumption. Also make sure you are staying physically active, limit or quit smoking, and manage stress in your life.

There are inexpensive generic and brand-name drugs available through online pharmacies to help manage these medical risks.
