Rockland County, NY ML Mercedes dealer finds new car buyers getting older
I don't quite fall into this group yet, but it won't be long before the AARP has my number. I can't say it's surprising to find that new vehicles are being purchased by older buyers. We don't buy new. Not because we wouldn't like to, but it's just not economically feasible.
For many older or retired buyers, though, that new car is not an economic hardship and it represents security - full warranty and someone else taking care of problems. Rockland County, NY ML dealers are watching this trend and believe that auto makers are adjusting their advertising accordingly.
I mean, we don't see Andy Williams crooning about ports cars or mini vans and Justin Timberlake isn't trying to make luxury sedans sexy. Sure, auto makers want young buyers, but they often gravitate to the lower-priced models and are more concerned with style and power than safety and comfort. Even customers of Bergen County used Mercedes can have their choice of certified pre-owned coupes or sedans - depending on whether they prize speed or comfort.
Well, this information stems from a study by JD Power and Associates on new vehicle purchases. Surveying 41,000 new vehicle buyers the group found that 62 percent of all new vehicle buyers were over age 50. This is up from only 39 percent of new car buyers in that age bracket in 2001.
We can cite the economy, but there may be more to it. Younger buyers may be less worried about the upkeep on a pre-owned vehicle, and with certified pre-owned sales soaring, that has become an alternative for many buyers. Should auto makers be worried? Likely not. With the older population increasing as the Baby Boomers age there will be no shortage of customers for them in the next couple of decades.
Bergen County used Mercedes dealers may want to focus more on the under 50 crowd, though. Another interesting twist is that 73 percent of hybrid vehicles are purchased by those over age 50. I have to say this statistic surprised me, as I hear more "green" talk from the under-50 crowd. Perhaps it's more talk than action.
Auto industry analysts say there are two reasons the older crowd buys new more often. One is the fact that the Baby Boomers make up the largest age group in the country and the other is their ability to spend more even during economic turbulence. Rockland County, NY ML customers will appreciate that the showroom is filled with beautiful new Mercedes-Benz models.
Mercedes-Benz dealers offer a wide selection of new and certified pre-owned vehicles - so there's something for buyers of every age and economic level.
