Rudi Giuliani - His Thoughts On Leadership Documented After 9/11
Leadership Explained by Rudolph Giuliani
Leadership Explained by Rudolph Giuliani
"A leader must not only set direction, but communicate that direction. He usually cannot simply impose his will-and even if he could it's not the best way to lead. He must bring people aboard, excite them about his vision, and earn their support. They in turn will inspire those around them, and soon everyone will be focusing on the same goal; the effort will come from within, which always results in more forceful advocacy than if someone is just going through the motions to please their boss."
Excerpt taken from Leadership by Rudolph W. Giuliani in his autobiography Leadership Copyright 2002
We've said this before, but it can be said again. Nobody likes to be managed. To be a true leader, you have to have a strong vision, but even more important, you have to have an amazing work ethic towards your goals. If you firmly think an idea will work and can convey it in an intelligent manner, people will catch on. Once they catch on, to be a true leader, you must show them that you are willing to go to far lengths to achieve your particular goal or complete your idea. Your idea can be absolutely first class in every way possible, but you must lead by hard work. Also, you must lead by not leading. Once you begin managing the people following you, they tend to become less enthusiastic. People want to become part of something not follow somebody else. The best leaders recognize the strengths and weakness of both themselves and their team. Then, he or she uses the strengths of the different members of the team to fill the weakness. True leadership is about involvement, not dictatorship.
The other main traits of a leader which, for the most part, are kindness, empathy, a burning desire to achieve a goal and braveness. When somebody sets out to do something (either large or small), they are taking some form of risk. People respect risk takers and tend to follow their ideas. Leadership is not something that can be taught from a self-help book, it comes from much trial and error.
John Madden put it best when he said:
"Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble."
Rudolph Giuliani was the Mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001 and presided over New York City during the 9/11 World Trade Center Attacks. Although Rudolph Giuliani was a Democrat in the 1970s, in 2008, he ran for the Republican Party Nomination in the 2008 presidential election.
In the end, when you apply these teachings in the office, the results both from your employees and from your candidates will steadily begin to increase. It is not new news that true leadership makes or breaks a corporation.
