Business has become very serious over the last decade or so

. People are so focused on turnover and bottom line that they have forgotten work needs to be fun and enjoyable as well. Even the best management strategists in the world agree that unless staff want to come into work each day, you will never get the most out of them. It is possible to take 'having fun' too far however end up jeopardising productivity and blurring the lines of authority within the businesses. However, here are 5 simple ways to keep staff happy and feeling like they are appreciated members of the team

Allow email circulars. There are often funny emails that get circulated around a company and between businesses. They frequently contain funny pictures, stories or video and some employers ban their staff from sending and receiving them as they feel it distracts from work. However, rather than harm work efficiency, these emails offer small breaks in work and improve the general atmosphere in the office. They should of course be monitored, but managers should allow their staff these small rest bites.

Have staff days out. Building a strong team is not all about work and deadlines, you need to take some time out to get to know each other on a personal level. Arrange some regular days out that people can plan for well in advance, and get staff input for which activities you choose. Some might want to go bowling, whilst others might like a cookery class. If you make sure you cover everyone's interest over the course of the year, all will feel appreciated and will want to repay the company with hard work.

Use nicknames. Much like email circulars, companies often ban the use of nicknames for fear that some people might find them offensive or unprofessional. However, nicknames are an informal way of communication and represent acceptance within a group and for the large part should be embraced by employers. Unless nicknames are blatantly intended to be offensive or rude, they can actually enhance staff bonding and attitude.

Reward staff. One of the most important things to do when running a company is making your staff feel appreciated and rewarding them for hard work. This doesn't even have to be anything large. Just a bottle of wine here and there, or giving the afternoon off work just lets them know that their efforts are not going unnoticed. It is also important to remember people's birthdays and give them a card/present to wish them well on the day.

Play company jokes. You have to be a bit careful with this one, but it works a treat in terms of strengthening team bonding and getting everyone focused on the same goal. Rather that carrying out little practical jokes internally, why not play jokes on another local or rival companies? This has to be done in good humour of course, but sending a big pack of rubber ducks by post or ringing them up pretending to be the Queen of England for example is just a good laugh and breaks up the monotony of some long working days.
