Rush Tickets - Rush Looks Back On Their Legacy Through New Rock-doc

No one ever expects to get old

No one ever expects to get old. It just happens one day-you look behind you and there are several decades stretching into the distance, with accomplishments and mistakes littering the way.

For rock stars, that time trail is even more astonishing. And for Rush-kings of prog-rock music that have never truly gotten the recognition they deserve-looking back serves as a reminder of how far the band has come in terms of critical opinion, as much as maturity. In a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, they spoke about "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage," a rock documentary about the band's epic career that's coming to theaters soon. Looking back at where they started and where they are today was somewhat mind-boggling: When the band was founded, its members weren't old enough to go to bars. So they started by performing in high school gyms, building a steady following among rock fans not much younger than they were.

The process of watching this documentary come together forced them to relive a lot of those old times again-including the terrible fashion, Geddy Lee admitted. From the Sun: "Lee says seeing the hair and costumes - the band went through a muumuu phase during their prog-rock heyday - 'made me feel grossly uncomfortable. Obviously looking back that far exhorts a number of feelings, from embarrassment at all the fashion crimes we committed to this kind of strange out-of-body experience watching yourself as, basically, a child. It was a pretty bizarre experience going through all those songs and feeling like, was that really me?'"

Sad but true: it really was. No artist with a sense of humor can help cringing when they flip through old photos of themselves trying to boldly make a statement, and Rush is no different. They have always been perceived as just a little bit different, somehow. During one interview in the new documentary, Gene Simmons of KISS notes that even as rock stars, they were a different breed. When the band toured with the notoriously hedonistic rockers, they didn't join the after party. Usually they'd play their set and then go back to their rooms to relax and watch some TV. Simmons was perplexed.

Rush has always been a head-trip of a band, though, more into philosophical questioning than the "sex" in sex, drugs and rock and roll. Their fans have always regarded them highly for being headier than other rock acts, or at least for having the ambition to try and push the limits of a rock song and really make a statement. It's one of the qualities that has developed Rush a fervent cult following over the years.

That cult has never been stronger or louder. With the release of this "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage" documentary, there is a good chance even more people will finally "get" Rush and jump on the bandwagon. But the ultimate act of conversion comes from seeing the band perform live. Get Rush tickets on StubHub and experience that on their upcoming tour.
