SCADA Systems 101 - What you Must Know

SCADA systems is a familiar term for many but few actually realize what it means and its importance. The acronym SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. The main purpose for SCADA systems is to gather data from various sensors installed in a manufacturing plant, remote areas, or factories. All those data that are gathered are then sent to a centralized computer system that is responsible for controlling or using the data received.

There are various elements that make up SCADA systems and among them are networks, signal hardware, controller, user interface or HMI, software, and communications equipment. However, the most important component in SCADA systems is the RTUs or Remote Terminal Units. This component is programmed as a logic converter that enables a sequence of actions to be set in a given process. Although the process is set and pre-determined though, humans can interrupt that logical sequence if there is a need for it.

SCADA systems have several features that facilitate in an efficient function, such as the ability to perform real time monitoring on a system. Hence, it is possible to check the statistics of a given system function. The results that are derived from the SCADA systems are then regularly communicated to the designated receiver.

The data that are contained and gathered in a database are named as points or tags. Each point that is found in the SCADA systems has its own input or output value. They can be identified as being hard or soft, wherein the hard points have a designated input or output found in the system. On the other hand, the soft points in a system have math and logical operations that are applied for those points.

The SCADA systems are the most ideal option available when there is a need to monitor performance or execute processes. This type of system utilizes open system architecture that allows easier communication between the system and external peripheral devices that are connected together. There are a number of modern applications for SCADA systems that are found in the society today. These include mass transit system, climate control system, among other modern applications. Also, it is not limited to a single industry that includes water management, manufacturing, traffic control, and other industries.

SCADA systems can also be used for configuring various types of applications, if need arises. In fact, it is capable of identifying any faults in a complex system, machinery, or any process that involves the use of technology. With SCADA systems, it is possible to identify the problem and alert the right personnel immediately to facilitate in an efficient performance of technology. This is therefore one of the key benefits to the system and is another method of utilizing advanced technology for efficient fault correction or other processes that require intervention. More benefits are to be expected with this system as it is currently being explored to further improve what it can do.
