People interested in applying for SNAP must meet certain guidelines having to do with resources and income

. Resources include bank accounts and vehicles, for example, while other possessions, such as a home, are not counted. Many people who work for low salaries or people who are unemployed, part-time workers, those receiving public assistance, or are homeless often qualify for the SNAP program.

In order to apply for food stamps you can first go to one of your nearby offices to see if you pre-qualify. If you determine that you might qualify you will then need to begin the application process. Both the SNAP office and Social Security offices are places where you can apply. If you have reasons whereby you cannot go to an office you may select a personal representative. You must first designate your representative in writing. Some states are now allowing an online application.

Usually the applicant completes the initial application form and then has a face-to-face interview. For whatever reasons, if you are unable to go to an office then you will be interviewed over the phone or someone will visit you in your home. The applicant needs to provide proof of various information. For example, you will need to show your income and expenses.

You will need to provide the last four pay stubs from your place of employment. If this is not available then you will need to supply a letter from your employer noting the gross and net wages during the previous four months. If you are unemployed you will need to offer that you no longer receive unemployment by the proof of termination. Additionally, you will need to prove the household resources by showing your account passbooks for each family member.
