When it comes to trying to find a place to live -- either permanently or temporarily -- safety is always a major concern

. Yes, the quality of life, access to cultural institutions, and employment options are vital, but without safety, they mean very little. Of course, safety is a relative issue -- one person's safety level may not be suitable for someone else. But, regardless of the relative levels, the safest city in the United States is located in the Golden State.

Which city enjoys this distinction? San Jose! The homes, streets, and hotels in San Jose are among the best-rated, both in terms of quality and safety. This is based on the Mercers Quality of Living Survey, which ranked the entire Bay Area as one of the world most desirable places to live. Out of a possible 100 places, it ranked 29th.

The same report claims that San Jose was ranked as one of the least violent cities in the United States. That's an impressive distinction, especially for a city of nearly 1 million residents. It's crime rating was 2.6, which means that for every 100,000 residents there are 2.6 homicides. A morbid statistic, but thankfully a very low one. Of course, this has come as great news to residents of San Jose.

The same Mercers Quality of Living Survey gave Baltimore a crime rating of 43.5, the highest on the index! Consequently, San Jose is roughly 90% below the national average. In terms of the robbery rate, San Jose also ranks favorably. It has the lowest number of robberies for cities with populations over 500,000, with a robbery rate of 86. Again, by comparison, New York City and Los Angeles have robbery rates over 300!

Mind you, this doesn't mean residents are immune from homicides or robberies in San Jose. It's still smart to park in well-lit areas, avoid dark alleys, and travel with a friend after dark, but by and large, if you're in San Jose you can rest a tad easier. This can make a world of difference, especially when it comes to trying to find a great place to settle down and raise a family.
