Salsa is sexy, saucy, social and healthy

Salsa is sexy, saucy, social and healthy. Most of us have images of its beat breaking through sultry nights. It is the embodiment of rhythm and has become an internationally known dance form.

Salsa originated from Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean and North America. Being the Spanish word for sauce, salsa connotes a spicy flavor, which it has. Its origins can be traced back to the Old World Contra-Danze (country dance) or Danzn. It was brought to Cuba by the French who fled from Haiti. The slave trade brought rumba to the New World and with it, beats that were originally used to communicate with African gods. Slaves who converted to Christianity preserved their heritage by incorporating such rhythms to the Danzn. During the prohibition in the 1920s, some Americans chose to escape to Cuba and brought radio broadcasting with them. And subsequently, Afro-Caribbean music along with various Latin dances including the Salsa were introduced to the Western world.

During the 1970s, a Puerto Rican named Izzy Sanabria almost single- handedly popularized the term "Salsa" after he started a TV show called "Salsa" along with Latin NY Magazine. His magazine also held the first ever Salsa Awards in 1975 which garnered international acclaim for the upbeat genre of music and its creators. The popularity of the Hustle integrated partner-work into the Mambo. In the 1980s, Salsa dance instructor Eddie Torres, began to formalize the Mambo and has made it into a professional dance genre.
