Salt - A Question Of Taste
A salt mill can refer to a few different items
. The term as it pertains to salt grinders and salt dispenser refers to a small canister with a grinding mechanism on the top. These grinder or mills are intended for use with salt crystals that are used for cooking or flavouring.
Salt mill also refers to a facility that separates salt from sea water. This term if often confused with the term for a table top salt dispenser. A table mill provides fresh ground salt in the same way that a pepper mill or grinder serves freshly ground pepper. These table top dispensers are often used with sea salt.
Sea salt differs from other forms of table salt in that it is freshly processed and free of any additives or anti- caking agents that may be found in other table salts. Un-ground sea salt does not cake like some finer grained processed varieties. There are varieties of sea salt that are produced specifically for use with a salt mill. These sea salts grind more easily than others and are less likely to absorb moisture.
While there are different types of table salt they do not always provide the same benefits. The basic difference between sea salt and table salt does not necessarily have to do with taste. Some people claim they can tell the difference in the taste but others claim there is no recognisable difference in the flavours of the two salts. Personal opinion and taste will probably dictate what you choose.
Even though there is not a big taste difference in table salt and sea salt there are other differences. Sea salt is harvested from the waters of the ocean and may be harvested in locations around the world. There are some sea salts that come from tropical locations and other areas with colder climates.
There are also some health benefits to sea salt, in moderation. Since sea salt is not fully refined it contains trace minerals that include iron, magnesium, potassium and iodine. Refined table salt tends to contain added minerals to replace those that have been lost in processing.
Salt is also available in multiple colours. Sea salt may be grey, pink, or even a mix of colours. While this may seem trivial there are culinary experts that appreciate the difference in colours and textures.
Although they are closely related products, salt mills and salt grinders are not exactly the same. A salt mill operates by crushing the salt through one of several chambers, and results in a freshly crushed salt. Mills have a small device that allows you to set the size of the crushed salt. Mills are a good choice for table top use. This allows different guests to crush their salt differently.
No matter what kind of salt you prefer or how well you like it ground, salt mills can provide you with freshly ground salt that is great for cooking or flavouring your food. There are many different styles of salt mill and you may be able to find some that accent your dining decor.
