Samson H. Chowdhury - The Dynamic Bangladeshi Business Leader

Born in the district of Pabna, Bangladesh, in 1926

, Samson H. Chowdhury has turned out as one of the greatest minds in the history of business sector of the country. He set up an example for the future generations of entrepreneurs. He also proved to be a great leader; by being a good vice president during his half decade (1985-1990) sway over the Baptist World Alliance, and a patriot; by risking his life during the nine months liberation war for the sake of Bangladeshi people.

Being a resident of the Asian side of the British colony, Samson H. Chowdhury proved to be very persistent student. He was licentiate of several good universities including Dhaka University and Harvard University. He also proved to be a very devoted son, especially when he opened up a pharmacy; since his father was a medical officer in an outdoor dispensary in Pabna, he showed fidelity by following a similar path as his Father's. After 6 year continuation of his pharmacy; along with three of his friends, Samson H. Chowdhury ventured into the pharmaceutical business. They named their company 'Square', as a matter that there were four owners and also it signified various things such as precision, excellence and quality.

Samson Chowdhury was a visionary. He has always had a different approach on everything compared to other top businessmen. He always prioritized people's welfare above most other things. Thus he introduced his company and himself to new sectors such as Textiles, Consumer goods, Banking, Insurance, Agro-vet products, IT, Media, Herbal Products and etc. His target was the growth of the country with local products, and to reduce dependency on foreign products. This also resulted in increased employment opportunities. Thus more talented people were able to work in the country rather than outside.

Samson Chowdhury demonstrated unorthodox characteristics. Being a protestant and also vice president of Baptist World Alliance, he thought everybody to be equal. Even though he lead the Protestants well and established their rights well, he also fought for Bangladesh as any other Bangladeshi. In fact his patriotism was so well known that he was on the hit list of the local collaborators during the liberation war. He was the first businessman to surrender his ration card, when Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman urged the rich people for the sake of the poor, during the liberation war famine. It was because of his persuasion and influence that the National Council of Churches sent ships full of food to East Pakistan; and it was due to his brilliance that, Bangladeshi refugee's had access to those foods in Salt Lake, Kolkata. His realization that Pakistani military would take over the food resulted into him asking for diversion of the ship to Kolkata Instead.

Being a 20th century man, Samson H. Chowdhury created a new image for the future generations of entrepreneurs to follow. He proved that no matter who you are or where you come from, all that one need is; courage, will and loyalty to achieve something big. He is one of the crown jewels in the history of Bangladeshi business.
