Slide Two Ways with the Samsung M3310

Slide Two Ways with the Samsung M3310

Author: Simon Drew

Slider phones have always been very impressive looking devices; most smart phones these days sport a physical slide out keyboard to complement their touch screen interfaces. The Samsung M3310 takes slide-engineering to a whole new level: dual sliding.

Dual sliding phones are pretty rare, but they often offer extra functionalities not common in other devices. In the case of the M3310, the extra feature comes in the form of a high quality speaker that appears when you slide down the front of the device. This little speaker may not seem like much, but electronics manufacturer Samsung knows how to make excellent speakers. This phone is no exception.

Good Quality Audio

It is hard to ignore a nice phone feature, and considering this dual-sliders extra speaker, it is hard to not notice the high-quality audio that the speakers can deliver. This is the product of the Digital Natural Sound engine (DNSe) system that is being used by Samsung for this phone. It is rare to see good quality speakers on a mobile phone, even the high-end 3G devices do not have good loud speakers usually, speakers are only good enough for speakerphone functions.

Speaking of music, the device is pretty limited in the types of files it can play. Audio files are limited to MP3, WAV and eAAc+ and videos are limited to MP4, H.264 and H.263 (no 3GP even). No support for OGG files means that high-quality audio files will have to be encoded in MP3 format.

Hardware Basics

The Samsung M3310 is a quad-band GSM device that supports 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 bands. It can connect to both GPRS (class 10, 48 kbps max) and EDGE (class 10, 236 kbps max) for browsing online. The WAP 2.0, xHTML browsers does a decent job when viewing sites for mobile phones but expect to have problems with viewing standard sites.

The screen on this phone is only 2.1 inches. While small, the TFT display does fine in handling mobile sites and video playback. It has a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and can display up to 256 thousand colors. This is excellent because the speakers will encourage users to use the phone as a video playback device. 2.1 inches is a good size for personal viewing as long as you are not watching a foreign movie that requires reading subtitles.

The camera provides excellent quality 2048 x 1536 pixel images, with 3.15 mega pixels; this snapper is a good notch above the average 2 mega pixel cameras found in most GSM devices. It can also shoot QVGA quality videos at 15 FPS.

Other Specifications

The phone comes with 40 MB or internal memory, though small, this can be supplemented with a microSD card. The card reader supports up to 8GB microSD cards (no confirmation if the cards are hot swappable). This should be taken note of if you are using higher capacity cards such as the 16GB or 32GB ones.

The lithium ion battery is a standard 960 mAh capacity which will give you 330 hours of standby and up to 4 hours and 48 minutes of continuous talk time on a full charge.About the Author:
