San Francisco 49ers Tickets - Not Time To Panic For 49ers
It can be easy to panic after starting the season 0-2
. With the way that minds are changed from week to week about how good a given team is, one can easily be persuaded into believing that the 49ers won't live up to the hype that followed them heading into the season. But with a quarterback coming off the most impressive moment of his young career and a team that nearly toppled the defending champion New Orleans Saints, there is plenty of hope left in the Bay Area for the 2010 season.
For the 49ers, it all starts with their defensive intensity. In a physical battle against a Saints team that has superior talent, the 49ers evened the playing field by playing smash-mouth football for four quarters. In the contest, linebacker Patrick Willis was everywhere, reminding everyone that he's one of the truly elite defensive players in the league. In addition to a big sack of Drew Brees earlier in the game, Willis also shot through the line late in the fourth quarter to stuff Saints fullback Heath Evans on the two-yard line. With the play, the Saints had to kick a field goal, leaving the 49ers down just eight points and giving them a chance for some heroics from Alex Smith.
Despite a fairly poor overall game, Alex Smith proved to be up to the task, leading the 49ers down the field with less than two minutes left and no timeouts. Not only was he able to get the ball down the field into the wind, Smith was able to hit his targets right at the sideline on multiple occasions, allowing them to move the ball without the time ticking off the clock. Smith also added two impressive first down runs that put them into position to tie the game, which they did on a Frank Gore run and a two-point conversion throw to tight end Vernon Davis.
Even though the Saints then marched back down the field and kicked a game winning field goal, the 49ers have a lot to be proud of. After looking nothing short of atrocious in week one, Mike Singletary's boys were able to rally around their defensive leader, Patrick Willis, and go down to the wire against the team that is nearly universally considered the best team in football. Ironically enough, if Smith had taken a bit more time on the 49ers' final drive, they may have had a shot to beat the Saints in overtime.
The other major positive aspect of their game to rally around is the production of Frank Gore, who had a monster game after being bottled up in week one. Gore rushed for 112 yards and had seven catches for 56 yards while scoring both a receiving and a rushing touchdown. With that type of explosive ability, Gore is definitely the type of player who can sell San Francisco 49ers tickets.
Moving forward, the 49ers have a very winnable game in Kansas City in week three. Though the Chiefs are 2-0 and Arrowhead can be a very difficult place to play, the Chiefs' record could also be a bit of a misnomer. Even in a loss to the Saints, the 49ers played well enough to move on to the rest of their schedule with confidence in both their defense and in quarterback Alex Smith. If they can improve in the turnover game, the 49ers can still be a dangerous team in the relatively weak NFC West.
