We have heard the opinion that SAP is something expensive and not really a good fit for small business

. We have to say that in our opinion this view is not adequate. Lets take a look at Business One, its features and pricing model. Before we begin lets take a look at advertising and its connection to real life. When you are in the airport of Chicago, New York or Atlanta you probably see the ads saying that Good business runs SAP or various combinations. This ad is probably targeted to Fortune 500 companies and it is about MySAP or R/3. The majority of businesses here in the United States are mid-size and small ones and the majority of air travelers are also mid-market company managers. Does this mean that we have to rule out this ERP brand? Probably not and this paper is about small business option. We have to warn you that this paper is not really technical and if you are programmer then we welcome you and encourage reading. This paper is rather dedicated to IT directors and business owners in helping them to select the right accounting package:

1.Functionality and interoperability. Do you expect to find something like discrete manufacturing, warranty contracts, human resources or inventory management in starter accounting software? Do you expect cheap system to be open for managerial reporting via Crystal or MS SQL Server Reporting Services? How about customizations and daily ongoing integration if you pay couple of hundred dollars then do you have these options open? These questions are rhetoric. The answer is likely no. We do not want to be critical but starter packages such as QuickBooks and Sage Peach Tree have to stick to low price on the market. Low cost translates into proprietary database platform (as the way to save on SQL Server brands subcontracting)

2.If you are just breaking through employment cycle and starting your own small business. At this phase especially if you advertised your company in various business listings - chances are high that you are receiving numerous calls about helping to establish your business with SEO, MRP, Lawyers, CPA and Accounting services telemarketing. We recommend you to cool down and disable robot and telemarketing calls on your 800 number and concentrate on the leads generation. MYOB, Peach Tree and QuickBooks are great packages for your initial few years. If you have small number of customers then AP and AR could be done in Excel with zero cost to you (assuming that computer data entry time is not counted)

3.Staking on the brand. We would like to mention several players on Corporate and Small Business ERP market: Oracle, Sage, Microsoft Dynamics and SAP. And of course there is the competition from the smaller software development firms doing their steps backed by venture capital or on their own cash flow. We believe that SAP is dedicated to accounting (GL, AP, AR, HR and Inventory, CRM) market niche

4.SAP Business One. The price is reasonable assuming that you understand the level when software is based on Microsoft SQL Server platform. Named professional user is slightly below three thousand. This license is required at this time of April 2012. The rest is easy as you are picking CRM, GL or Distributions only licenses at the price below one thousand per each
