Sap Business One Does It Fit Small Company?

It is popular opinion that small businesses can choose low cost starter accounting package and it should cover all the needs

. However these applications might be not ready for being integrated with other databases. Small doesnt automatically mean simple as business secrets are often associated with unique data entry rules. Another concern that consultants hear is something like this: SAP is for large corporations and not for us. In this small publication we would like to answer popular questions:

Q. SAP is probably too expensive in licenses and requires a lot of consulting hours to be implemented. We would rather take a look at Sage Peach Tree or QuickBooks brand. We also heard that Microsoft Dynamics offers low cost ERP. Would you agree with that?

A. First of all popular business software vendors typically have packages in each price diapasons. SAP offer for lower mid-market and small organization is Business One. We guess that the idea that SAP is only for big guys might have association with the ads that we see in most of the airports and some magazines. Microsoft also offers professional solution for lower midmarket. Dynamics GP could be seen as competitor to Business One. There are also opinions that Microsoft is diversified: accounting, operating systems, SQL and computer games just to open the list. SAP demonstrates concentration on business software

Q. We are located in Chicagoland and even being small we have complex operations including discrete manufacturing and field services. We realized that Dynamics GP could cover with its manufacturing suit and Field Service set of modules. However the price seems to be too high and we feel that data entry will require more efforts and we will not need all the features. QuickBooks seems to be too basic for us as well

A. Include B1 in the list of candidates. It has simple discrete production logic as well as MRP with inventory replenishment. Also there is warranty contract logic. Might be good fit for you

Q. We have seen the demos for most of the packages. It looks like we have to implement custom logic. How open is it for customization?

A. Before jumping into programming have your reseller to check if add-ons from ISV channel could cover the needs. If they already did a research and nothing is out there among products then you could consider coding with SDK libraries and code samples. Try to keep your custom module as small project as it is something exposed to future upgrades

Q. We are sure that we will need custom managerial reports. We have complicated Customer Statement and Sales Commissions. What should we consider as a tool?

A. Good idea is to consider Crystal Reports. Business Objects are owned by SAP and you will get license with the software purchase. If you are not familiar or not comfortable then consider another tool which could work with Microsoft SQL Server

Q. We would like to get idea about the price

A. Software pricelist might be minimized to one professional user. But in real situations you should expect several users and from ten thousand dollars
