Save Money On Your Plumbing With Efficient Solar Pool Pumps

There is no doubt that over a nice warm and sunny weekend

, when you have nothing to worry about, the blue shimmer of the pool is rather inviting. You take a quick dip, stretch and cool off in the water and then lie back in the sun for a few minutes. What's going through your head? Is it the power meter spinning away in the background as you pool pump works overtime?

Running a pool is expensive, but if you set it up correctly, it could be a luxury you can use and enjoy without the agony of large electricity charges. Heating and pumping will make up the enormous parts of your pool costs. You'll choose to do without pool heating, but you do need a pump.

Before you purchase a standard pool pump, consider a Solar Pool Pump, as they can significantly lower your pool running costs. If you already have a pool and pump system, retro-fitting improvements may still be worth it. However if you are just about to put a pool in, stop and think about your plumbing and pumping setup.

Firstly, a solar powered pumping system will eventually draw no grid power and soon pays for itself. Secondly, the actual pool plumbing can add to the load any pump (solar powered or not) draws. The more power the higher the "cost", especially if it is grid connected and you are paying power bills.

Solar pumps are generally about half the size of a standard pump because they run on more efficient DC not AC power. Their efficiency and lower power draw also means a far longer life. For backup, they can be grid connected in case you need to run it at night. Choosing a pump that is too big for your use also simply adds to your running cost. Typically a pool pump will pump the entire volume of the pool per day, any more than this is simply over-pumping. Apart from those considerations, the actual pool plumbing can add to the load that the pump has to work on.

Basically a pump "pushes" water through the piping and filters then back into the pool via the inlet pipes. While it doesn't seem like it, water is affected by the friction. Too many bends, undersized piping or the wrong filter can significantly add to the work a pump has to do, and can through overwork, shorten its life. In a simple example, if the flow rate through your pump and pipes were to be reduced by 50%, then the back pressure on the pump will be cut to only 25%, that is a big saving on work and power draw.

So, to make sure you get the most out of your pool this summer, set it up properly, make it both energy and water efficient. It will save you both money and in some way will lessen your environmental footprint on your community.
