Save Money With Solar Power For Homes

As we experience the soaring monthly energy bills

, we have to have a second look on how to save money. Although we may already have changed our lifestyle to conform to agreed advice on conserving energy in our house, the charges for our electricity and gas requirements consistently increase. We therefore have to look at the current technology of harnessing energy using solar power for homes.

Solar power is basically harnessing the free energy of the sun to generate electricity. There are two basic ways to generate electricity from the heat and light of the sun. First one is by using photovoltaics (PV) that can harness the light from the sun and directly converting it into electricity. The second is with concentration solar power (CSP) that indirectly converts the heat from the sun to electricity. CSP requires the refocusing of the heat of the solar rays into a single focal point that will boil water. The superheated water will then be used to run the turbines that will eventually generate electricity.

The CSP technology was adapted by eco-friendly countries and large organisations to create electricity for communities. They use "solar farms", arrays of curved mirrors that follow the location of the sun, to reflect all the beams into a single location. This technique is very simple and had proven to be successful. It also has a basic drawback, as it is very dangerous to be used domestically. Energy conscious households have adapted the use of PV in their residential houses. This technology, although not yet very efficient, is the current trend to energy self-sufficiency.

Photovoltaic derived its name from two main words. "Photo" means light, while "voltaic" means electricity. PV panels can be formed by placing positive and negative silicon between two non-reflective glasses. One of the sheets is treated with boron and the other phosphorous and this creates a positive and a negative charge. When the PV cells are illuminated by the sun- electricity is created.

PV panels can be directly connected to the electrical components that use direct current (DC). Our normal house appliances uses alternating current (AC) and it is required to be attached to an electronic device called inverter. As the sun is not consistently available to illuminate the PV panels, the solar panels are normally used to charge the batteries that run the house electrical components.

Solar power is expensive, as we have to invest on new devices. We will be able to recover the cost as time progresses. In some countries, rebates are offered by government institutions when solar power is used. Solar energy is the way of the future. It is clean, effective and efficient. Producing it does not create toxic fumes that destroy our environment. The good side is that we will be self-sufficient. Just imagine one less bill to pay every month.

Solar Power is an investment. It is a wise financial investment. It is also an investment into our future. Investing in solar power for homes is the right direction, as it is the future.
