In our crazy New Zealand weather, an air conditioner or heat pump can be a lifesaver, but not when it comes to the electricity bill. There are plenty of ways you can still enjoy your home's air conditioning while saving money on your bills:

First of all, if you're having air conditioning installed, make sure you hire a professional. An improperly installed air conditioning unit will not work efficiently and could cost you hundreds over the course of its lifetime.

When choosing an air conditioner, consider the cost difference between the initial cost and the ongoing costs. The cheaper air-conditioners are usually less efficient and have higher monthly operating costs. Energy-efficient air conditioners might cost more initially, but their lower monthly operating cost quickly balances this out.

Clean your air conditioning unit. Dirt and dust builds up on the indoor coil and is the single most common cause of faulty and inefficient units. Wipe off the outside of the conditioner as well, and do the same with the external units. Check and empty the filter once a month to keep the air conditioning unit running at peak efficiency.

Next, make sure you have your air conditioning serviced regularly. Keeping your conditioner in the best condition possible helps it remain efficient throughout its life.

Even when you have an air conditioning unit, it pays to be as conservative with heat and cooling as possible. Close your curtains on a hot day to keep the house cool. Shade windows that face the sun, and open windows to get a cross-breeze through your home.

Try to avoid activities that generate heat, such as dishwashing, until the evening, when the temperature is cooler.

Don't use a dehumidifier at the same time as an air conditioner. This forces the air conditioner to work harder, increasing your electricity bill.

Don't place other electronic devices that generate heat (lamps or TVs) next to your air conditioner, as the heat from these tricks the air conditioner into believing the air is hotter than it is.

By using energy-saving principles and keeping your air conditioner clean and well maintained, you can stay cool in summer (and warm in winter) without adding hundreds to your electricity bill.
