With the recession still gripping Britain, all of us are looking for ways to save money and reduce our household bills and outgoings

. On top of this, we are seeing more and more information about the negative impact that wasting energy has, not only in terms of money, but to the environment also. With this in mind, we are looking for ways to cut our bills and make our homes tick along whilst using less energy.

One of the biggest ways we use energy in the home is through the lighting, especially as the dark mornings and evenings start to roll in over Winter. Energy saving spiral light bulbs are available from a variety of retailers and efficiently take the place of existing light bulbs whilst giving off the same amount of light. In fact, some types of spiral light bulbs actually give off a brighter glow than conventional bulbs, and are better for doing tasks such as reading or sewing that require a lot of hand-eye coordination and concentration. Spiral light bulbs can offer up to a 70% reduction in the amount of energy they use to light a room, and are available in both bayonet and screw fixings, which means they are completely versatile when it comes to replacing existing bulbs. They also tend to have a life expectancy of up to ten times longer than normal bulbs, which means they will need replacing less often and work out saving you money in that respect also. Additionally, their spiral design means they are aesthetically attractive, and will not detract from the style of the light fitting into which they will be installed.

Spiral light bulbs come with an 'A' energy rating, but may not be suitable for dimmer lights or timer switches. Therefore, it is very important to take this into account when looking to purchase them. They come in a variety of shades including Daylight and Warm White, and micro versions are available for smaller, more compact use into light fittings that may not be able to accommodate the larger size.
