Savvy Shopping Tips For Buying Clothing

We all love shopping for new clothes, there's nothing better than stocking up your wardrobe with some new pieces but whether you're shopping in-store, online or using catalogues there are lots of things you should consider when buying clothing to be a savvy shopper.

Shopping in-store

We all love a good shopping spree and it's always great to have a day out at the shops. The other thing about shopping for clothes in-store is that you can actually see and feel the items and try them on unlike buying online and through catalogues. You also don't have the extra expense of postage costs and the hassle of returning items that aren't right or don't fit. You'll probably have a better choice in the clothing sales too so you'll get a better bargain.

Ask for other sizes

Clothes shops don't always have all their available sizes out on the rails so if you can't find your size don't be afraid to ask the assistants if they have it in their store room.

Don't impulse buy

It can be tempting to spend more than you have when you're out shopping with your friends as clothing shopping is very addictive and you can end up spending much more than you planned, so make sure you have a budget and stick to it. Think to yourself if you really need that item of clothing and if you'll wear it, especially when shopping in the clothing sales.

Changing rooms

Changing rooms in clothing shops are notoriously unflattering and compact and are often a nightmare on busy shopping days. If you don't want to queue to use the changing rooms or don't like the unflattering mirrors and lights then why not buy the items and try them on in the comfort of your own home? If they don't fit properly then you can just return them.

Check returns policy

Baring the above comment in mind, always check the returns policy in-store if you're likely to need to return or exchange an item because all companies have different policies and some items cannot be returned in certain circumstances.

Shopping online or home shopping catalogues

So many more people are buying clothes online and even though catalogue shopping is quite a traditional way of buying many more mature women still like to shop this way. The beauty of online or catalogue shopping is that you can browse from the comfort of your home without having to battle the crowds and queues, and then you can try on your clothes in the comfort of your home. And what's more is that there is often more choice of clothing and sizes than you'd find in a shop.

Check size charts

Whether you're always the same size or often sit between two clothing sizes, it's always a good idea to double check the sizing charts on websites and in catalogues because sometime they can be slightly different to standing sizing, so don't worry if you have to buy a larger size on certain ones. Also take a look at their leg length measurements to make sure you're buying the right trouser length. There's nothing worse than your order arriving and it not fitting properly; alternatively, if you're not too sure about size why not order it in two different sizes and send the other one back?

Consider colour differences

Don't forget that everyone's monitor settings are different so when buying online you need to consider that the colour you're seeing may not be the actual shade of the clothing. It's just one of those things, so always bare it in mind if you're looking for a particular colour.

Stick to your budget

It can be tempting to splash the cash on clothes when you're not in-store, when buying online or in a catalogue it often doesn't seem like real money so make sure you limit yourself to what you can afford.

Remember postage costs

Most websites and home shopping companies will charge postage and although this isn't usually much it is an extra expense that you wouldn't have from shopping in-store, so remember to add this to your shopping budget.

Look for discount codes

The great thing about shopping online is that you can often find voucher codes on the internet to get money off your order. They are usually free postage or a certain percentage off your order, which you wouldn't get if you bought in-store.

Check returns policy

As you've not tried on the clothes there is a higher chance that you'll want to return than, whether it's because they don't fit right, they're not what you expected or you simply don't want them anymore, that's why it's important that you check the returns policy before buying. Most websites and catalogue companies have standard returns policies but have a quick read to check there are no exceptions and if there are particular requirements for returning items.
