Scenic Splendour Along The Rivelin Valley

South Yorkshire in England is home to the Rivelin River

. This relatively fast-paced river ends by flowing into the River Loxley on the peripheries of Sheffield. The river has played an important part in the metal, iron and flour industries as the flow of the river helped turn many a mill along the valley fed by a picturesque river.

This valley, known as Rivelin Valley, is a scenic woodland spanning three and a half miles. It is along this that the Rivelin Valley Nature Trail was formed in 1967. The area through which the nature trail proceeds used to be a woodland in which deer were hunted in medieval times. It has since evolved into the home of close to 20 industries, which steered the river into many ponds to accommodate their mills. These ponds still exist and are maintained due to the work of the Rivelin Valley Conservation Group.

The valley through which the nature trail winds is at points quaint, tranquil and completely peaceful. The trail is a popular one to follow and the hike usually starts either early morning or in the afternoon. Hikers usually opt for this course based on the scenic route and wildlife. However, the historically important landmarks too get their share of fame. Some of the mills, most of the wheels and ponds are still intact and various stone tablets, even dating from the Roman period, have been found along the course.

There are some refreshment options along the way at various restaurants and cafes that have been set up for the benefit of the many hikers that the trail attracts.
