School Can Wait
We are seeing a growing trend in the United States to put children in school at increasingly early ages and for longer periods of time. There is a strong push for all day kindergarten. In some school districts here in Utah they are creating a class to prepare out little ones for kindergarten. Who needs to be prepared for kindergarten? Once they get these new classes set up, will they want an additional class to prepare toddlers for the class that prepares a child for kindergarten?
In reality, we should be doing just the opposite. We should be keeping children home longer and be putting them in school later. Let's look a few reasons why school can wait.
Every family has a value system which includes things such as religion, political views, ethics, traditions, and heritage. Usually, parents would like to pass that value system on to their children. Children pick up such things in their early years. If they are home, they will pick up the value system of their parents, while if they are in school they will pick up what ever values that are being taught there.
The early years are a time of bonding. Children bond to parents and siblings when they are very young. If a child is taken out of the home too early this family bonding may not occur. And who knows who the child will bond to instead.
Children need love. The best place for them to get love is in the home, where they get the individual attention of loving parents. They will not get that kind of love and attention in a classroom of 30 plus students.
There have been studies that show that a child's brain somehow changes when they are about eight or nine. This change helps them to better retain what they learn. Studies have shown that for most children, if they stay home until the third grade they will catch up with their peers within a year.
The earlier a child starts school the more likely it is that they will get sick and tired of school before they are really ready to learn. Too many of our youth are merely serving time in the institution we call public school.
The world is a class room. When children are home, a mother can take them to the park or other places where they can explore and learn about some of the wonders of nature. They can learn about work by helping mother around the house. These are learning experiences they miss when institutionalized too early.
My recommendation is that you keep your young ones home as long as possible. Enjoy them while they are young. Teach them as long as you can. Help them learn about nature, your values, your heritage, and how to work. Do not put them into school until at least the third grade. And when you feel you must put them in school, if possible, find and send them to a private school that shares your value system.
