School May Use Unusual Storage Solution

A school situated in Colwick has applied for planning permission for a building project that would see it use an unusual storage solution.

According to reports on This is Nottingham, St John the Baptist Primary School wants to utilise a former commercial aircraft as a wildlife classroom and changing rooms.

If it gets the green light to go ahead with the initiative, storage racks would be used in the overhead space on the aircraft.

Those behind the project have revealed the aeroplane would probably be a Short 360.

According to head teacher Chris Belton, the idea is a good one and has got those at the school going "plane mad".

He noted that by using the item, which would house fold-down tables and chairs, as well as storage racks, the institution would save money.

According to Mr Belton, the project would cost around 35,000, which is less than the 80,000 that would be needed to create a wooden building on the site.

If the initiative goes ahead, the aircraft would be connected to water and electricity supplies and would even have a toilet, as well as storage and learning areas.

Commenting on the prospect of such an unusual development, ten-year-old pupil Jack Marriott said: "I think it will be better as if you go in a normal classroom it's a bit boring. If you have a lesson in a plane it will be a lot more exciting."

He added: "I heard about a school that had one on the news and I wanted one."

The institution may be particularly keen to make savings on construction projects at present because of the tough economic measures being implemented by the government, which are seeing public sector spending fall in a bid to reduce the size of the deficit left as a result of the credit crunch.
