School Proms And Fashion

Having a prom at the end of school is a growing trend in the UK; unheard of until the late Nineties

, the American tradition soon caught on and is now widely practised in high schools all over the country. As well as the tradition of prom itself, however, we have also adopted the styles in which American teens dress for this special night.

There are several traditions associated with the school prom in terms of style, most of which are the same as the American way of doing things. Girls tend to wear full-length dresses, with their hair in an elaborate up-do, with accessories of a clutch or evening bag, heels and sparkling jewellery. Boys generally are attired in formal wear with a coloured tie and occasionally a buttonhole to match their date's corsage.

However, the UK has slightly different style rules to America when it comes to the high school prom. Although long, more formal dresses are still very popular, it is also common for girls to wear cocktail dresses and other less formal dresses; they also as a rule tend to steer clear of the tiaras that many American girls choose. As the prom style rules here are slightly more casual, some girls may also choose to wear their hair down rather than pinned up. The tradition of corsages, and indeed prom dates, is slightly less popular here than in America.

Girls have many choices when it comes to buying a prom dress in the UK; many websites sell them online and a growing number of high street stores are offering a wide range of formal dresses for prom attendees to choose from. Boys are slightly more limited for options, with buying or hiring from a formal dress company their only two options.

Style and the school prom is an area that is going to continue to expand and adapt in the UK as more and more schools offer end of year balls or leavers' proms, meaning that as a market it is growing fairly rapidly.
