School Recess Is Important For Students
In most schools, the average school day is about eight hours long
. During the elementary school year especially, students are bursting with energy that causes their minds to wander. Recess is a great way to allow students to wind down and expel some of their pent-up energy. Also during this time it was usually the teacher who went outside with the class. So while the kids are taking a breather the teachers can too.
In school, it is important for students to develop necessary social skills. In class, students are unable to communicate because they are busy doing their work. Recess allows students to develop relationships, experience and deal with confrontations and learn about other people.
The recess period is very exciting. The school bell goes for the lunch break. There is a great noise in the whole building. The children rush out of their classrooms. They wait for this period impatiently. Most of the students take their lunch boxes and sit in the playground. They sit in groups of three or four. They take their food and rush to the water taps.
There is a great rush at the school canteen. Some students play different games in the play ground. Some students go to the library. They read newspapers and magazines. Some students sit in their classrooms. They complete their homework.
When the students come out class-rooms, they relax themselves in different ways. The students of rich families enjoy nice things, sweets, fruits or milk which their parents send for them. The students belonging to average families eat some cheap things which they buy from the hawkers who reach school by this time. The poor students generally bring food and eat it sitting in the class-rooms.
Almost all the schools have their own play grounds and play facilities. So children can spend their recess in a more productive way by playing games in close relation with nature. Recess does more than make children better behaved and more attentive at school. Playgroundbased challenges such as disputes over game rules, teams, and sharing space and equipment can also be learnt during recess time.
Recess is also considered to be a great time to cultivate social skills. During this free time, students of the same class or different classes share their lunch, play different games, and at times get involved in healthy discussions on current issues. Such discussions not only made the children aware of different issues, but also help them develop public speaking skills.
The teachers sit in the staff room. Some teachers take some food or tea. They refresh themselves for the remaining periods. When the bell goes, all the children go back to their classrooms.
