Secret Spain: Hidden Places To Stay In The Balearics

From Majorca to Ibiza, the Balearic Islands have plenty to offer every type of traveller

. We've rounded up a list of places to stay in each island's hidden gems so you enjoy each place while staying clear of the crowds.

On the island of Ibiza, THB Los Molinos is a great place to stay. Attractions close to this hotel include the Ibiza Cathedral, Castle and Figueretes Beach. After a day of exploring, the poolside bar and bar/lounge are great places to relax and unwind. The four-star accommodation includes an indoor pool, children's pool and a spa complete with a health club, hot tub and sauna. Parking is complimentary, which is excellent if you're planning on hiring a car to explore the far corners of the island. Accommodation choices on Menorca include the Sou Bou Gardens Apartments. Close to the beach, the privately owned Spanish-style apartments are privately owned and offer self catering services. They are designed to be used as a base to explore the island, and come complete with a pool to cool off at the end of the day.

In Majorca, the villages off the beaten track are some of the prettiest places on the island. One of the more beautiful finds here are of the villages of Orient, near Palma. Nestled at the foot of dark mountains, the honey coloured houses make for a picturesque visit. To make the journey up to the village, the best mode of transport is a mule-drawn cart, which can take you as far as the local hotel where you will continue on foot. While you're there, it's worth taking a moment to take in the stunning views of the Orient valley and the surrounding mountains.

On the journey back down to Palma, another spot worth visiting are the exotic gardens of Alfabia. It is a mansion that once belonged to a rich Arab, but has since been rebuilt and furnished with various antiques and paintings. The main reason to visit though, are the gardens. They boast fountains, pools shaded by palms, pergolas, pavilions and an avenue with an abundance of flowers and trees.

Heading out to the mountains in the countryside of Majorca, you will be sure to stumble upon some hidden wonders. In the far west of the island, the winding drive up to Mount Galatzo is rewarded with stunning views and quaint villages. A particularly scenic drive is the one from Palma to Calvia, through Capdella, to the little village of Galilea. This village offers unique long, narrow, two-storey houses that are interspersed with gardens and orchards. If you continue to drive to unspoilt corners of the island, you'll uncover lots of your very own hidden gems in the form of monasteries in remote mountains, chapel in lush valleys or villages full of local colour.
