Secrets to Dog Training - What You Should Know When Training Your Puppy
First time dog owners often don't realize the complicity of maintaining a well behaved puppy. You don't tend to think about all the trouble they're going to cause in the future while they're still cute little 8 week old puppies. But soon enough, just like human babies, they grow up quicker than you wish.
Some breeds of dogs show higher amounts of disobedience, like the Siberian huskies. In such a case, Siberian husky training would be harder and you'd need to be more patient with them. But the same rules apply for all breeds of dogs for the most part.
As they hit about 6 months of age (which is probably equivalent to 12-13 for humans because of similar actions exhibited) they start to show dominance, test your leadership, show higher levels of aggression, and all the good stuff that comes from an average (teenage boy) puppy.
Dealing with dominance issues is simple - you set the rules that your puppy has to follow and enforce them. That is, if your puppy isn't allowed to sit on the couch, hang out in the living room, or sleep on your bed, then you enforce those rules as much as possible. Your puppy would rather see the world in black and white than shades of gray. Believe me, your husky doesn't mind being corrected so if you see your husky doing something wrong correct it right away and it will be happy to learn from mistakes.
Another aspect of being the alpha dog is making sure that simple yet effective steps are taken in certain circumstances. For instance, when feeding your puppy, call him to you. Make him sit, and then give him the food. When you come home from work don't automatically go to greet your dog. Instead, ignore him and unload your groceries, grab some food, sit on your favorite couch and then call your dog to you.
Likewise, for example, when you leave the house make sure you go first and your dog follows you. This will tell your dog that you're in charge and he's following. Same rules apply when you're walking down the hallway and your dog is in the way. Move him aside so that your dog learns that humans have the right of way and the dogs give them the way. Don't step over him.
If you let your dog lick your face that could mean your dog is challenging your position in the pack. If you surrender to the dog then your dog assumes his position. That's acceptable when you already established a strong understanding who's the pack leader. In the wild, the dog won't sleep on the same level as the pack leader. Pack leaders sleep higher above to keep a lookout. If you let your dog sleep on the bed with you, your dog assumes he's the same level as you.
These simple yet effective methods are a great way to start enforcing rules and making your dog understand that you're the leader. Of course, there shouldn't be any harsh punishments given out. To learn more about dog training check out the Secrets of Dog Training.
