Sedation Dentistry Can Get Rid Of Your Dental Anxiety

If you feel nervous when you are confronted with the prospect of going to the dentist

, you are not alone. A very high number of people experience some form of dental anxiety when they visit the dentist. Some estimates say that as much as 20 percent of the population suffers from dental anxiety. For some people, they can overcome this anxiety and receive the dental care they need. For others, their anxiety becomes so intense that they avoid going to the dentist at all costs, even when they have problems that require a dental procedure to fix. If you are one of these people, you should talk to your dentist about sedation dentistry. Many dentists use sedative medicine to help their patients fully relax during their dental appointments. There are a few different types of sedation that your dentist may use including oral sedation and nitrous oxide.

Oral Sedation

One of the most common ways that your dentist can sedate you is through the process of oral sedation. To do this, your dentist will simply prescribe a pill that you will take shortly before your appointment. After you take the pill, you will begin to feel totally relaxed and all your anxiety about the appointment will melt away. Although you will feel totally relaxed, you will never totally lose consciousness so you will be able to respond to your dentist's questions and commands. During the appointment, you will feel calm and relaxed and the appointment will seem like it flies by. Since you will not be able to drive a car after taking the medication, you will need to bring a companion with you to the appointment. He or she will then drive you home after your appointment is over. You will then rest comfortably for the rest of the day and will be free to return to work or school the next day. Most sedative drugs your dentist will prescribe are benzodiazepines and are not known to be addictive or habit-forming.

Nitrous Oxide

Another common sedative method that dentists use is the inhalation of nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas. When inhaled, nitrous oxide produces a pleasant sensation that will leave you feeling totally relaxed, yet still conscious and able to interact with your dentist. Throughout the dental procedure, you will be give nitrous oxide through a mask. When the procedure is complete, your dentist will discontinue administering the gas and the effects of the nitrous oxide will almost immediately begin to dissipate. Since the effects dissipate so quickly after your procedure, you are able to drive yourself home in most cases, although you should talk to your dentist before doing so.
