Even though glasses may seem like a normal part of life to an adult, they can have a tremendous impact on the life of a child. Children still have to worry about teasing at school and other social problems.

To help your child overcome the social problems of wearing glasses, it will be very important that you steer your child towards and select the 'cool' pair of glasses yourself.

You may even want to volunteer to be a supervisor of the children. As you watch the children play on the various play structures and with the other balls and toys, examine what kinds of glasses are being worn.
Try to a sense of which pairs of glasses would be considered 'cool' and which ones would be subject to severe teasing. While this can help when you visit the store to select a pair of frames, be sure to ask your child which pair he or she would like.
Your child will usually know very well which kinds would be teased and which ones would be alright. It is very important that your child is not teased too much about his or her glasses.
If he or she is teased too much it is likely that he or she will try to stop wearing them. Your child needs to wear his or her glasses. Even if it is slightly more expensive, you may find it worthwhile to invest in the pair with extra features such as photochromic lenses, if your child thinks it is cool.
If your child thinks they are cool, they will wear their glasses with more confidence and he or she will be more inclined to wear them. In addition, he or she may stand up to the teasers to point out these cool features where upon the teasers would be awed.
Something you will want to avoid if possible is allowing your child to choose frames that look exactly like yours or your spouse's. Many children want frames like this because it helps them feel grown up and sophisticated.
Unless these kinds of frames are in style at the time, these frames tend to be subject to severe teasing. Try to steer your child to what is fashionable at the time.
Another decision you will have to make with your child is whether to purchase metal or plastic frames. It is also good for you to know that double bridges are only for boys while single bridges are for either girls or boys.
In the past, plastic glasses were considered to be the best option. They were more durable, less likely to become bent, less likely to break, lighter in weight, and generally less expensive.
However, their metal counterparts now feature all of these things today. Choosing plastic or metal is simply a preference choice that you will have to make on your own.
Besides these style choices, one of the most important functional aspects of the glasses that you will need to make sure they have is that the bridge fits on the nose. If the bridge does not properly fit, the glasses will be very uncomfortable and the child will not want to wear them.
Plastic frames of course only have one setting and if this setting is wrong, the glasses will continually slide down their nose. Metal frames do have adjustable settings so they are more likely to fit correctly.
When your child tries on the glasses, make sure that there are not gaps between the bridge and the nose. The gaps indicated that the bridge does not fit correctly.
By purchasing glasses that fit correctly, you will be able to help your child avoid developing the habit of looking over the tops of their glasses instead of directly through them. As you help your child select the right pair of glasses, you will be able to help him or her make a decision that results in the right pair of glasses with as little teasing as possible.
