Self Awareness Course 79 - Rationalizing, Justifying & Defending
People often asked, how do I know when I'm going unconscious? Students often say things like: Sometimes I don't even see it, it just happens, I get sucked into it. We are typically not conscious of when we go unconscious. Well there are three things you want to check throughout the day: are you rationalizing, justifying, or defending? When you observe yourself in either of these 3 emotions, chances are you either have or are unconscious; your mind has taken over and you are not in full conscious awareness of what is going on in your own head.
There is something you can do to keep yourself from going or staying unconscious. Ask yourself, what I'm justifying? Do I have to prove to someone to anyone or to myself? What am I having to defend and why? If you are engaged in having to explain these feelings to others, there is probably a high degree of emotional volatility, step back in these cases and observe what your mind is doing and this will give you greater objectivity, clarity and focus.
If you find yourself justifying the ends justifies the means, these types of thoughts need to be observed. Most mistakes, most deception and many crimes are committed through some form of rationalization, justification or defense in the minds of those to unconscious. Being conscious of those mental patterns will keep you from engaging them and acting upon them. Replace the old pattern of thinking with a new one. What would be the best way to think under the situations where these negative emotions come up. Think about that.
