Self Defense For Women: Five Things You Need To Know

If you've decided it's time to consider some form of personal protection

, you need to review the alternatives.

Stun guns.

Stun guns are designed to disrupt the electrical signals which control muscles. They work by direct contact with the assailant and are most effective when pressed against skin. Higher voltage stun guns will work through clothing, in general the higher the voltage the thicker the clothing can be. Most stun guns are powered by small batteries, but some are rechargeable. There are many different models to choose from and many are designed to look like other devices, such as cellphones or flashlights. The ownership and use of stun guns is restricted in several states.

Tasers.

Tasers are very similar to stun guns but work at a distance. The Taser shoots projectiles into the assailant and then pulses electricity through the contacts. The idea is to fire the device into the assailant and then drop it while you get to safety. The assailant will be incapacitated for at least thirty seconds, in fact according to police studies the TaserX26 is considered to be one of the only ways of stopping an assailant who is under the influence of alcohol of drugs and is more effective than a 9mm handgun. Some Tasers can also be used as contact stun guns. Tasers should come with a lifetime guarantee. If you have to use it you leave it attached to the assailant, send in the police report and your Taser will be replaced free of charge.

Pepper Sprays.

Pepper Sprays are often recommended by self-defence professionals because they can incapacitate the assailant for some time. Pepper spray makes breathing difficult by swelling the mucous membranes. It also swells the veins in the eyes which forces the attackers eye's closed. Effects last for 20-30 minutes. Some sprays include tear gas. Although pepper spray is legal in all 50 states there are some restrictions on the sizes of cans, where they may be bought and the concentration of the spray.

Personal Alarms.

These very compact devices do not harm an assailant in any way, but law enforcement agencies often recommend them as the use of an alarm, especially a very loud alarm, can startle an attacker and make him or her run away. Simple devices like a whistle can draw attention to a situation where help is needed and have no moving parts to go wrong or technology to fail. Some very loud alarms are combined with flashlights and make excellent tools for use when finding your car on a dark night. There are no legal restrictions on personal alarms.

Martial Arts.

We've all seen pictures of girls beating up men twice their size; on television. But there are martial arts which are specifically designed for smaller lighter people to use against taller heavier opponents. Martial arts require a considerable effort and expenditure of time, however experts say the benefits are enormous. In addition to considerable improvements in physical fitness, anyone proficient in martial arts is typically more confident. This is conveyed in their body language which, on its own, deters attackers.
