Self Defense In The City And What You Can Do To Stay Safe

Living in the New York City area there are always people who seem to want to drag me into the Big Apple for some kind of fun

. The only problem is I'm not a big fan of leaving my home base much less my local area, but if you're like me you compromise to be social. So if you're going to have a good time don't forget you need to stay safe, because the dangers multiple when you get to any large urban area. You might be taking a break from the daily grind, but there are always people out there willing to take advantage of the situation and prey on you and your friends.

Just recently Forbes magazine put together a list of the safest cities in the United States based off of the 2008 Uniform Crime report put together by the Justice Department. The list includes everything from workplace deaths to deaths from violent crime, and even deaths from natural disasters. The city of Minneapolis in Minnesota ranked number one, and New York City was ranked eighth on the list. The remaining cities are all over the country, but keep in mind just because they're consider safe doesn't mean they're crime free. Also keep in mind while the FBI keeps good records they can only present what is reported to them, so there are plenty of unreported crimes. We'd like to think things are safer since the release of the Self Defense Training System, but it wouldn't be right to take all the credit for a safer country.

Statistics aside you can't tell a mugger that the average number of attacks for the month have already been committed and expect him to leave you alone. One of the reasons crime drops is because of community involvement, and if you're visiting a city you've become a temporary member of the community. So keep a charged cell phone and if you spot something let emergency services know, and keep in mind where you are in the city, so the dispatcher will know where to send help. Also before you go into the city plan out your route and know what is in the area you're heading too, and as always know more then one route home.

When it comes to actual fighting you shouldn't be the only one in your group who knows what to do when things go bad. Encourage your friends and family to take part in self defense training, and have a plan if you're attacked (there is a reason the modules are setup to help you teach others). If you're able to run away great, but have a safe place to fall back to like a police station, so nobody is out wondering around aimlessly. Familiarize yourself with local laws in regards to firearms and other tools you use to protect yourself. You might be well within your rights in one jurisdiction, but you could be committing a felony just few miles down the road. Also you should consider packing a go bag for your car to deal with any emergencies you might encounter.

So go out and have a good time, but remember just don't say you'll be safe take steps to make sure you'll be safe. A night out should be a lot of fun, but if you prepare for the worst you won't regret it the next day. So plan out things the best you can, and include the people you go out with in your training, because after all you want to keep having fun together for years to come. A drinking buddy of mine years back used to laugh at me because I always had my Leatherman multi tool on my belt, but it stopped when he needed it to fix his jeep. Remember have a good time, but don't forget why you train when you do head out to the city.
