Self Defense Moves : Smart Techniques
Street crime is a serious modern-day issue and knowing basic self defense moves can
be an important safeguard in the event of any unanticipated personal attack.
Understanding the concept and purpose of self defense is the most important thing in successful execution of personal safety. The first thing to be kept in mind is that these techniques should be used only on a protective level and not offensively. The main purpose of self defense is to repel and subdue an attacker, emphasizing hitting the pressure points and pain threshold of that person. Strength-wise, in most cases, the victim is weaker than the attacker which is why learning about the human pressure points is important.
A few self defense moves are listed below. These are simple moves that help you to confuse and inflict pain upon the attacker, giving you an opportunity to escape and fetch help.
Walk Confidently
The first and foremost rule when it comes to safety on the street is to behave confidently. Looking confident and alert will make attackers think twice before approaching you.
Aim for their Ears
Behind the ear, there is a bone located directly above the equilibrium center of the brain. A good shock blow to that part will leave the attacker completely disorientated and off balanced.
Smack their Throat
The male human body has a quite interesting feature at the neck called the Adams apple. A hard smack to that leaves the attacker gasping for air since his airways will be temporarily blocked.
Strike their Nose
There is a small cartilage located right under your nose. A well placed punch to that area will leave the attacker in serious pain, activating the tear glands of the eyes. He will be in great pain and cannot see. In case your attacker grabs you from behind, another tactic is to ram your head against the culprit's nose.
Go for their Eye
If the attacker is heading towards you from the front, grab his ear with your fingers and force your thumb onto the whole of his eye. Use a pushing action to press your thumb forcefully back into his skull.
Keep Your Keys Handy
Get into the habit of carrying your keys in one hand by making a fist with one of the keys pushed between your middle fingers so that you can hit the assailant's face as your first response to an attack.
A recent study has revealed that in order for an action to be stored in our muscle memory, we have to repeat it 25,000 times. Obviously, this is a practical setback to memorize your self defense moves for an automatic response during an attack. Hence, it is advisable to base one's self-defense moves on everyday movements so that when confronted by an attacker, these self-defense techniques will come naturally. For instance, consider the following moves.
The V-Trigger
Situation : When grabbed by the arm wrist or hand, and your other hand is free.
Method : Make a tight fist and find the spot on back of attacker's hand, directly below the V formed by the first and second fingers, close to the knuckles. Ram the point sharply with your knuckle.
Related Motion: knocking on a door
Mechanism : You disrupt a nerve in the middle of the hand, which reflexively causes the attacker to open his hand and release his grip
The Shin Kick
Situation : When both of your hands are constrained or your attacker is wearing gloves
Method : Drag your foot up in natural motion at a 45-degree angle to get your toe up and hit hard with as much force as possible.
Related Motion :A low-level kick, like playing kickball or soccer.
Mechanism:The shinbone is very close to the skin, allowing easy access to sensitive nerve centers.
The key to your safety is being prepared at all times and acting smart more than acting strong. If the attacker is after your money or jewels, it is wiser to give it to him rather than to risk your life trying to defend a material possession. Avoidance is the best strategy for self defense, followed by resistance, counter attack and other self defense moves as the last resort.
