Self-Help Gurus Who Purport Greatness But Only Have a FaceBook Page
Having a FaceBook Page, and purporting greatness online doesn't automatically make someone great. In fact, it just so happens, and many psychologists agree that the number one reason people post to FaceBook is out of low-self-esteem and the need to validate themselves. Indeed, FaceBook has worked very hard to increase its membership by playing to this unfortunate innate need of the up-and-coming generations. However, one should be asking themselves if FaceBook is the answer to a serious problem or is it merely a Band-Aid to a much bigger challenge of the human psyche in our modern information age.
Indeed, over the last couple of years, I've become rather alarmed by this, and it has also become a hot topic at our Think Tank. Recently, we noted that there are now self-help personal growth coaches and self-proclaimed geniuses trying to garner new clientele on these social networks, basically preying upon this unfortunate and troubling weakness. Not long ago, I noted just such a personal growth mentor and coach from running around and posting to various blogs to come visit his FaceBook Page.
Apparently, attempting to build up his clientele base by catering to the Xer generation or the 100s of million young teenagers online, so he might get to know them. However, I'd like to recommend to the industry that just because a coach has a FaceBook Page and a few friends posted there, that does not validate them as an expert professional coach.
Indeed, there are professional degrees for real coach and several industry certifications too. If a coach or mentor is running a self-help website pretending to be a guru in this sector, they ought to at least have a degree in psychology with letters next to their name, or a professional degree, and belong to a professional association otherwise it puts up red flags everywhere.
One of the big problems is that so many people these days are desiring to have a personal coach to help in their personal development, that there are lots of easy prey for fraudulent or fake mentors. Obviously, there needs to be more oversight in this field, as it appears there are just too many rogue players, and I fear it is getting worse. If this industry cannot police its own, then it is only a matter of time before the regulators will, and maybe they should?
Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this and think on it
