Self Publishing: Are Literary Agents Seeking Self Published Authors
?
Literary agents are now actively searching for "good" self published authors, according to an article on Forbes.com. When I read the article my initial reaction was "about time". In my opinion far too many decent self published authors never receive the acclaim that they should. Then I read the article a second time.
On sober reflection I recognize the euphoria that comes with feeling justified and righteous; I see now how it got in the way of reasoned analysis; on reflection I realize that perhaps this isn't such a big deal after all. The question I ask myself is this - What in actual fact has changed? My answer - In real terms nothing at all. At first I thought I was being too cynical or perhaps too pessimistic. I don't think so. The article states that literary agents are looking for "good writers". The key here is the phrase "good writers". There is nothing new in that statement - is there? Literary agents have always been on the lookout for "good writers" who they believe can make it. Good writers who can make them a lot of money. That's the game. That will always be the game.
A good writer will always rise to the top of the pile. The reason for this is simple, a good writer has several admirable qualities; strong writing, perseverance, connections, high output and above all a burning ambition - all of which are required to sustain an individual over a period of years or if you're really good, decades.
As I re-read this article, I slowly came to the understanding that what was really being said was that literary agents would have no problem considering self published authors if they could prove that they had all of these qualities. The question now is how can a new writer prove that they have these qualities?
The answer lies on the internet, in the marketing power of Twitter and Facebook not to mention hundreds of social bookmarking sites as well as the online distribution network that is Amazon. The fact is that anybody with a PC can reach millions of potential readers/fans. Of course doing all of this takes a lot of effort, energy expended without fear, an often exhausting exercise in futility but...but if done well the outcome can be very rewarding. The outcome can be six figures back to back. Think about that.
