. Today, many people consider renting a space at one of the self storage facilities. People looking to use self storage fall into two categories: those who need and should rent a unit, and those who do not actually need one. This is an important and often over-looked fact about the self-warehousing industry. Consumers should keep this in mind, obviously, as their money is being spent. However, the operators and owners of rental space facilities and the employees at all levels within the industry should also bear this fact in mind. After all, the self storage facilities are a service just like any other. For any service-based industry, it is the clients needs that dictate the solution. By turning ones business into a solution provider, no matter what goods or services are being offered, customer retention can be maximized.

Imagine a couple coming in to check out about renting a unit. After some preliminary queries, the sales representative pressures them into hiring a large unit for a six-month period. However they find while packing their unit, they really do not have enough to fill the whole space and they could have probably sold some items and managed to find room about their home for the rest. They walk away from their experience renting at one of their local self storage facilities angry. Now, If one considers the odds of this hypothetical couple and their circle of friends needing storage space in the future against the odds they will return to this particular business, one can see that the smart move would have been to advise the costumer to reconsider the space and get their business and their friends business later.

One of the benefits of self-warehousing is the flexibility. Most locations have a wide variety of spaces available for different lengths of time. For the industry and the consumer alike, the philosophy should be one size does not fit all. There is a unit at a self storage facility to suit every need. Here are just a few examples of needs and solutions:

* Joe, student. After living in a dorm all year, Joe is heading back home to seek summer employment. Rather than rent a truck or inconvenience his parents, Joe and a few friends threw-in on a unit. Between them this was much cheaper than moving stuff.

* Randy, small-business owner. Randy sells a variety of small items on an Internet auction site. As his business expanded, his home was turning into a makeshift warehouse. He rented a

* medium-sized unit at one of his nearby self storage facilities,

* and now he makes his sales online and then fills his orders at his safe and accessible unit. He even writes part of his rent off as an expense.

* Frank and Mary, retired. This retired couple recently sold their large home with all its unnecessary space in favor of a smaller dwelling. However, now they find it hard to house their boat and RV during the off season. As well, Frank has mobility issues.

* In the end, they found a garage-sized unit on the ground floor with power doors.

These three examples should be instructive to both the consumer and the provider of space solutions. The consumer should note the variety of different problems people have and the ways they go about solving them. The provider might want to consider these examples from a marketing perspective. Perhaps there are ways to reach some of these demographics that are not currently being implemented. However one approach the issues, the thing to keep in mind is that self storage facilities should be about flexibility and solutions.
