The four C's still apply to a diamond when you are attempting to sell it, and in most cases this is an even more important part of the deal than ever before. When the clarity, cut, color or carat weight are well known and in top form, you may be able to receive a reasonable amount for your gems.
Diamond clarity is an important factor to keep in mind, as much so when you sell as it was when you originally made your purchase. The less inclusions there are and the brighter the coloration, the higher the price tends to be. Grading gems based on clarity is generally a job best left to the professionals, so it might be in your best interests to take your gem to a jeweler to have it professionally examined. There may be a small fee associated with this, but it can sometimes result in a higher resale value. As the old saying goes, knowledge is power.
Bezel
The diamond bezel can refer to either the sloping facets beneath the crown in the diamond cut, or it may refer to a rim which holds the diamond into its setting. Since gem cutting is a skill that most people do not possess, the cut does make a significant difference in the final value you may receive. This is the only part of the gem that human hands have any substantial control over, so it needs to be well done in order to be successful. The diamond carat weight is formed during the cutting process, and the size of the gem is going to play a huge part in its price.
Colored Diamonds
Of course, diamond color is also an important factor to consider. As there are plenty of different types of colored diamonds that you may have, you can often find a better sale price if you mention precisely how well colored your gem is. This tends to go up as your gem's color becomes more rare, since rarer items tend to sell for more than common ones.
Selling diamonds ultimately comes down to the process of supply and demand, after all. When the supply of something is only okay, the overall demand tends to increase accordingly, which raises the price you can expect to receive for your more rare and interesting object.
Loose Diamonds
Perhaps the best thing about taking your gems to an online broker versus a pawn shop is that you are dramatically more likely to be able to sell them in the first place online. While a pawn shop is naturally only going to be concerned with the melt down value of the metal in the setting of your gem, in the online world you can connect directly to other consumers of these diamonds, who are not simply looking to resell them to someone else. While there might be diamond flippers, most of the online buyers simply want a great diamond for their own setting.
