Holi is one of the major festivals celebrated in India. There are many festivals but none of them are celebrated with the same exuberance and vibrance as Holi. Every festival in India has its own significance. Holi signifies youth ,joy, happiness, warmth and the colors associated with the springtime. A time when sun is shining and the nature is soaking in its warmth. It is a time when nature is at its full glory, new beings come into existence and one can observe various shades in nature. And these shades of colors make themselves prominent in the festival of Holi. It is a time when people let go of their past and start afresh with new beginnings.
According to the hindu myth King Hiranyakashyapu had thirst for absolute power and hence he wanted people to treat him like god. However his son Pralhad who was a believer in Vishnu refused to avail to this. Hence the king asked his sister Holika who was believed to be immune to fire to sit on a bonfire with his son Pralhad on her lap. However Pralhad due to devotion towards lord Vishnu Pralhad survived and Holika got burnt to death. Hence the on night of holi people light bonfires and celebrate the triumph of good over bad.
Also the according to the legend lord Krishna in his days of youth was a joyous and a light hearted spirit who used to go around Vrindavan playing pranks on Radha and other Gopis. In some legends Lord Krishna and Radha are depicted celebrating holi in the hamlets of Vrindavan and Gokul. So in some parts of India, Holi is a celebration of the love, happiness, friendly spirit and mischiefs associated with the youthful days. Spring brings about with it a warm light hearted spirit and joyous nature which forms the base and essence of the festival of holi.
It is celebrated in spring on the day of phalgun purnima according to hindu calender which either comes in the end of the month February or the beginning of March. The season of spring is denoted by joy and various shades of colors in nature. Hence Holi is a festival of colors. Colors like gulal', abeer' etc which are traditionally made out of neem, haldi , kumkum, bilwa which have medicinal properties are used.
It is celebrated in various parts of India as well as in some countries outside India. Every region has it own tradition and way of celebrating it and also it has different regional names associated with it. However on the whole people have get-togethers, they greet their family, friends and relatives by applying colors to each other. They enjoy sweets and drinks together (which may be sometimes made of bhang ). The festival helps in bridging the social and economical differences among the people and bringing them closer. It helps in renewing relationships and forming new bonds.
