College is not only about getting educated, it is a journey in itself that will lay the foundation of your future

. Choosing a college therefore requires much thought than just blindly selecting one of them hoping that it would turn out the best for you. In Part 1 of the series, two basic criteria - location and culture of the college were discussed. This article discusses the questions related to academic program that you should be asking when selecting your college.

What kind of course are you looking for?

Bachelor's Degree

Master's Degree

Doctorate

Online learning

Associate's Degree

Professional Certificate

Diploma

These are some of the options that you should consider when you are planning to select your college. If you are looking for an online course, colleges that don't offer online courses go off the list helping you to narrow down your choices.

What field do you want to major in?

Be it science, computers, accounts, or arts, if you know where your interest lies, then it is easier to further narrow down your college list. Some of these colleges may be particularly known for the education in the field you are looking for. It is always better to target such colleges since they could help advance in your career. Generally, it is easier for graduates coming out from top schools to get a good break in their field.

What if I am not sure what I want to do yet?

If you are not sure about your field or kind of course you are looking for, it is better to choose a college that allows for trying various options. This becomes possible in colleges that require you to take classes in varied areas for the first year or so, allowing you to get a taste of how things are in each field.

Understanding and narrowing your college list based on the academic program you want to join can significantly reduce your search.
