Sewing Tips For Your Handmade Quilt
After you have selected your pattern, fabric and color scheme for your handmade quilt
, and you have taken the care to meticulously cut out the quilt pieces, you are ready to start sewing the pieces together to create your quilt top. Seeing your project start to come together can bring a great deal of satisfaction. The appearance of your finished handmade quilt depends on the quality of work during each step along the way. The process of sewing the individual quilt pieces together requires the same care and precision you exercised in cutting out the quilt pieces. Following a few simple steps will assure your finished quilt top will soon be a beautiful handmade quilt that you can be proud to say you made.
If you are using a pattern, be sure to read and follow the directions completely. This is especially true for more complicated patterns with a many different sizes and shapes of quilt pieces.
It is a good idea to lay the quilt pieces on the floor in the same order in which they will be sewn together. This will give you an idea of how the different colors and fabric patterns will look next to each other in your finished handmade quilt.
If you are making smaller quilt pieces into larger blocks and then sewing the blocks together, you will also want to lay the blocks out on the floor. Again, you can rearrange according to what you think looks good. One fun thing about creating a handmade quilt is that you get to decide how you personally want it to look.
For some quilt patterns, it is a good idea to number the pieces (or rows) with sticky note paper so when you carry them to the sewing machine, you will sew them together in the order you intended.
Start at the top (or bottom) and sew one section or row together at a time before proceeding to the next row or section. Put it back in its place so you will remember where it belongs in the overall layout of the quilt top.
By all means, use the same exact seam allowance throughout the entire quilt top. This is absolutely essential. If you get sloppy here, your quilt top will turn out uneven and lopsided. Many quilt pieces are sewn together using a 3/8 inch seam allowance. Check the quilt pattern you are using for the correct seam allowance to use.
If you dont have the seam allowance markings on your sewing machine, put the needle in the down position and measure carefully from the needle to get the seam allowance you need. A piece of masking tape can be used to mark where the edge of your fabric should be while sewing.
Always press the seams before sewing two rows together. In other words, do not sew two completed rows together until each individual row has been pressed.
Do not press the seams open. This can cause stretching or widening near the top and bottom of the seam and make it difficult to line up the seams when you sew two rows together.
Press both seam allowances in the same direction. Press every other row in the opposite direction to keep the quilt top from being bulking where the seam allowances are. When you are ready to sew two rows together, line up the seams of the rows. The seam allowance for one row will have been pressed in the opposite direction of the other. This is called nesting and prevents the quilt top from being too bulky in those spots.
If you have cut your quilt pieces and sewn them together properly, your seams will line up perfectly, assuring a beautifully put together quilt top. Once you have finished the sewing and your quilt top is complete, you will find personal satisfaction in a job well done.
