Sexual Addiction
The hope is that there is recovery, that it is possible. "The journey of a thousand miles begins by taking the initial step". The good news is that you don't have to make the journey alone. Sexual addiction is an ongoing and potentially worsening pattern of compulsive sexual behavior despite awareness of negative consequences on the addict's life.
The sex addicts has a compulsion to engage in the problem behavior despite the fact that it has become emotionally dissatisfying and self-destructive. Compulsion is defined as an "irresistible" urge to engage in a behavior. The sexual acting out produces guilt, shame, and repeated unfulfilled promises to stop.
When choosing between inpatient and outpatient programs, there are pros and cons to consider. The highly structured environment of inpatient treatment makes it more difficult to relapse in early recovery. Yet, an outpatient program is less confining and the addict lives in a real world environment while practicing the skills s/he is learning in treatment.
Addiction-related behavior or problems may be hidden intentionally or unintentionally from the therapist and the couple may not understand the connections between the sexual behavior and their other presenting problems.Additionally, many treatment providers have a general lack of knowledge about sexual addiction. Sexual addiction demands treatment.
It may be early sexualization or early exposure of an individual to inappropriate sexual material or behavior or traumatic experiences during childhood such as physical and/or sexual abuse, abandonment, or emotional trauma.
This is why treatment of a sexual addict entails much effort and support not only from the individual but also his or her loved ones. Support and encouragement from 12 step groups and a recovery community, group therapy, and even family and friends all contribute to the treatment of the sex addict and assist the healing process.
They have a growing appreciation of the reality of the problem but tend to counter this realization by minimizing the problem or thinking they can handle it by themselves. Most fear that letting go of the addiction would mean giving up sex completely.
The moment we have a sexual thought, the chemicals begin pumping...that's how pornography works, and why we need to control the images and ideas we get from the computer, books, movies, etc. Still, there are a lot of sexual thoughts already permanently in our brains. If we've taken the time to develop an addiction, these thoughts will pop up often. So, how do we fight those thoughts?
Sex addicts use sex as a drug to deal with life's ups and downs. If your spouse seems to "need sex" when s/he is stressed out, and s/he seem to feel better afterward (briefly), it could be addiction.
The sex addict could be a co-worker, a friend, a partner or a loved that struggles in secret for fear of rejection and due to the shame and guilt attached to sexual addiction. There are different faces of a sex addict. Below are some accounts of sexually compulsive or addicted persons.
