Shabana Azmi - Finest Actresses In Bollywood
Shabana was born on 18th September, 1950 in a Muslim family in New Delhi
, India. Her father, Kaifi Azmi, was an Indian poet and an active member of Communist Party of India (CPI). Shabana mother, Shaukat Azmi, was a stage actress.
Shabana completed a Graduation degree in Psychology from St. Xavier College, Mumbai. She later did an acting course from Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. Shabana explains her inspiration to join FTII was Jaya Bhaduri diploma film SUMAN.
She was so stirred by the film that she decided to join FTII and topped the successful candidate list when she passed in 1973. In 2006, Shabana starred in Umraao Jaan (2006) which was a remake of 1981 film by the same name. The movie failed to do well at Box Office.
Shabana acted in 4 movies in 2007 including Honeymoon Travels Private Ltd (HTPL) (2007), Positive (2007), Dus Kahaniyaan (2007) and Loins Of Punjab Presents (2007). The character of Naheed, played by Shabana in HTPL was loved by the audience.
Sorry, Bhai! (2008) saw Shabana play the role of Gayatri, who is a very affectionate and at the same time daunting mother. In 2010, Shabana acted in Gurindar Chadha It A Wonderful Afterlife (2010) which was a romantic comedy. She essayed the role of a caring mother, who can go to any length to get her unattractive daughter married.
Shabana is a 5 time National Award winner. She also won 4 filmfare awards out of the 12 nominations. Shabana was awarded with Padma Shri by the Indian Government in 1988. She is also a proud holder of Yash Bharti by Government of Uttar Pradesh.
Shabana also earned Rajiv Gandhi Award for excellence in Secularism. Gandhi International Peace Award was bestowed on Shabana by Gandhi Foundation, London in 2006.
She was also appointed as a goodwill Ambassador for India, by The United Nations Population Fund in 1998. Shabana is also a member of National Integration Council headed by the Prime Minister of India and National AIDS Commission (of India).
Shabana has been involved in social activities since very early in her life. She has actively participated in fighting AIDS, Child Survival and injustice in real life. She has voiced her concern over a variety of issues. Her work as a social activist was denounced by many terming it as publicity gimmick but she proved them wrong.
In her later career Shabana was involved in campaign against communalism. Shabana was linked to Shekhar Kapoor (director of MR. INDIA) in her initial career but she later married Javed Akhtar (film writer and lyricist) on 9th December 1984. It was second marriage of Javed Akhtar.
After their marriage, the family was started being termed as Akhtar Kazmi film family. Shabana has a step son; Bollywood director and actor Farhan Akhtar and a step daughter; Bollywood director Zoya Akhtar. Cinematographer Baba Azmi is her brother.
Shabana is aunt of Bollywood actresses Tabu and Farha Naaz.
