Shimla-Beautiful Valley In Himachal
Shimla- a beautiful valley in Himachal, capital of Himachal Pradesh
, is Indias largest and most famous hill station, where much of the action in Rudyard Kiplings colonial classic Kim took place. The city is a favourite spot for Indian families and honeymooners. It is a perfect halfway house if you are heading to the Kullu valley, or back in the other direction towards the plains of Haryana and Punjab. It is also the starting post for forays into the remote regions of Kinnaur and Spiti. Shimla once was the summer capital of British India. It owes its character almost wholly to the British, who turned this stopover on the way to the temple of hill goddess Shamla into the summer capital of the sub continent. The rest of its make- up is courtesy the governments of independent India. Many a tear was shed for their beloved Shimla when the colonizers had to leave India. Today its well developed facilities, easy accessibility and many attractions make it one of Indias most sought after destination. You can count on gorgeous Himalayan views and make excursions to the untouched countryside around. There is no denying the fact that Shimla is perhaps the best equipped hill station, offering a wide range of accommodation and other infrastructure. So ignore the fraying edges and make your way up here. The salubrious air and picturesque views of the Himalayas act as a balm, helping you ignore the scars of over-development as you succumb to the charisma of Shimlas enduring past. Shimla- a beautiful valley in Himachal is built on a central ridge, around which seven peaks just out into the sky. The original village of Shimla first sprang up on the flat ridge and developed vertically, settlements moving upwards as each new viceroy or governor-general took over from his predecessor. Depending upon how much time and energy you have at your disposal choose a hill for what interests you.
Southeast of Shimla, Kasauli is a perfect place to break your journey from Chandigarh in Punjab, whilst nearby Nalagarh Fort has been converted into the finest hotel in the state. Northeast of Shimla, Sarahan, site of the famous Bhimakali Temple, set against a backdrop of the majestic Himalayas, can be visited easily from Shimla which is en route to Kinnaur. In Himalayan lower ranges, it is surrounded by pine, cedar. oak and Rhododendron forest. Towards the North lie the snow-covered high ranges, while the valleys below hold streams and swaying fields. Within the town are splendid colonial edifices, quaint cottages and charming walks. You can go for shopping on the fashionable Mall, visit its neo-gothic churches, the grand former vice regal lodge or the cemeteries. You can also take one of Shimlas delightful walks and go for sightseeing tour in the suburbs-Mashobra, Bekhalty road, camp sites and the golf courses at Naldehra designed by the British viceroy, Lord Curzon. Shimla-the beautiful valley in Himachal is today popular not only among the Punjabis and Delhi-ties, but tourist from all over India who visit Shimla round the year. Its jaded colonial charm also attracts foreigners looking for a taste of the Raj. The best time to visit is during October and November, before the Himachali winter sets in, when the days are still warm and dry, and the morning skies are clear. Expect larger crowds on weekends and holidays, notably Christmas and New Year. Whenever you come, bring warm clothes as the nights can get surprisingly chilly.
