Shirt Pocket Diplomacy: Reasons Why People Keep Business Cards

I was at conference with colleagues from various businesses one evening and I was

amazed by the variety of design, sizes and colors of business card printing. As soon as the program started, I brought all of them out of my shirt pocket and carefully laid them on the table. Looking at them one by one, I cannot help but be amazed by the creativity of the designers. I was really impressed by some of them because it did not only convey professionalism; it also enticed those that received them to know more about the company and their products.

Those that needed a makeover also were obvious. Some came across as really cheap business cards. They were the ones whose colors faded or those that were designed and printed at home. Not that this homegrown cards were unacceptable. But if you have a multimillion business, you do not expect a card that is unprofessionally done, would you? These cards, compared to the others which were printed on quality papers, were easily crumpled. So before they smear my shirt pocket, I disposed of them secretly.

Having established the importance of passing the trash test, it is also equally important to know the reasons why people keep cards to begin with. Read on and find out the reasons why people keep business cards.

1. As a link to potential suppliers or colleagues

Many businesses attend events because of the need to establish contacts who might be able to supply them with a hard-to-find chemical or ingredient. Others keep business cards because of the need to reach out to colleagues in the same field for benchmarking purposes.

2. For future employment purposes

When I attend gatherings, I take careful attention to the companies I would like to work for, and with, in the future. I exert extra effort to establish contact with people from these companies and make sure that I get their business cards.

3. For referring

At home, I have a case of business cards that I would need for my home like a plumber, an electrician, a pest control. I keep them so that I would not have to look for one in the yellow pages and for the reason that I know these providers because I have met them at least once as I have their business card. I also refer them to my parents or close friends when they need someone to repair a leaking faucet or faulty wiring.

These are just some of the reasons why people keep business cards. Other just keep them to show the world that they have boxes upon boxes of contacts. For whatever reason we may have, the idea here is to have your card kept at least not in the shirt pocket.
