Shorts are often looked at as a summertime apparel garment and, as such, are often reserved for wear in the warmer months of spring and summer. Shorts are not generally known for their versatility in the wardrobe. Common pairings include shorts, basic camisoles, and sandals for women while mens shorts are most-often associated with loose-fitting tees and flip flops. In recent seasons, however, designer collections are showcasing shorts as a business-casual article of clothing. Some designers even took a basic short and effortlessly transformed it into a dressy evening-wear piece.

Women have many style options to create a smart, dressy-casual look with shorts. Fitted grey, khaki or black-coloured bermuda shorts can easily be paired with a looser-fitting blouse or printed top and worn with high-heels or platform heels and a clutch. This is an incredibly easy look to assemble and is the perfect choice of outfit for an evening on the town. Pairing a looser top with a fitted short is a compliment to most body types and is very flattering, as well as being on-trend and in-style.

Celebrity stylists have been sending A-list movie stars and singers onto the red carpet in glamorous "shortsuits." The key to this look is to pair an impeccably-fitted blazer in a neutral colour with a matching bermuda-length or shorter short and top it off with a sky-high pump, clutch, and chignon hairstyle. The result is head-turning and allows a woman to look (and feel) like a million bucks.

Mens shorts can be updated and made to look polished in a variety of ways. The "country club" look is very in-style right now. Men can pair a grey or khaki-coloured cargo short with a long-sleeved button up shirt in a striped pattern and wear a crested v-neck sweater over it, completing the look. Boat or deck shoes or sandals round out the look and scream preppy-chic. Similar to this look, a casual neutral-coloured short can be paired with a basic printed or screen tee and topped with a loose blazer in a neutral colour. Leaving the blazer open over the tee lends a contradicting pristine-messy vibe and, surprisingly, is a smart look for an evening ensemble for any man.

Wardrobe pieces should be versatile. Shorts are one of the most basic elements of any closet, and can be worn and updated in a variety of ways. Finding the right pieces to match with shorts does not have to be a laboured task. A quick assessment of one's current wardrobe pieces and a quick flip through the pages of any fashion magazine can be all that is needed to give life, style, class, and sophistication to a an old pair of shorts.
